MY BIRTHDAY TRADITION: A RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS

hands2.jpgWhen I turned 60 I threw myself a huge party. In lieu of gifts I asked people to perform a random act of kindness for someone else, then write to me about it.

The results blew me away. They ranged from simple good deeds to one amazing gesture that seemed to me like a random act of sainthood.

As different as all the cards, letters, and emails were, they all had one thing in common. Everyone thanked me.

Well, it's my birthday again. So, go ahead — make my day. Odds are, you’ll also make yours.

OK, in honor of your birthday here's what I came up with:

1. Despite my crabby mood, I've been nice to everyone. And as a result, I'm not crabby anymore.

2. I have been fostering a 6-week baby raccoon for several weeks, until she can be placed in a wildlife rehab center and then released back into the wild. This invloves bottle-feeding, potty training, and lots of love-giving.

3. I donated $.55 to the vending machine and got a Butterfinger in return. That really made me feel good.

4. I tell all my friends about this great author I'm reading, and how they must go read his books now!

Happy Birthday!!!

I suffered a shopping trip with a friend - it was her birthday last month and she wanted to spend her birthday vouchers. I hate shopping in the city as I'm too short to stand in a crowd and not end up with my nose far too close to someone's armpit. My friend had fun though and appreciated my efforts at not being a grouch through out the trip. She also knows not to ask me to do it again for at least 6 months.... *shudder* :o)

I sponsered my work colleagues to do a charity run for Cancer UK and donated more than I would normally. I'm now thinking about doing the run myself next year.

But I think the thing that was most appreciated was making my mum a mug of coffee, offering to strip the wallpaper in the hall ready for decorating and buying her some yummy british strawberries... and then not eating them myself :o)

I think this is a lovely idea. I think I might have to ask my friends to do the same for my birthday next year - thanks!
